THE WEST BANK
Travellers to Egypt will be overwhelmed by the splendour of the colossal statues of Ramses II situated at the facade of the temple of Abu Simbel. Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, is considered the pearl of the Mediterranean and is home to many Greek and Roman sites. Edfu hosts the Temple of Horus, which is the most well-preserved in Egypt. Located in Esna is the temple of the god Chnum, who created humans and animals from the silt of the Nile. Plenty of cultural treasures, including the Valley of the Kings, await you on the Theban West Bank. Situated close by are the two gigantic colossi of Memnon, which once guarded the entrance to King Amenophis III’s temple.

THE EAST BANK
For fear that the Aswan dam might have posed a threat to the ancient cultural heritage of the Nubians, 22 monuments were moved and reconstructed in safer locations with the support of UNESCO. Among these were the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae and the Kalabasha Temple, which originally stood 50 km further south.
Al-Qahira, the Arabic name for Cairo, with its approx. 15 million inhabitants is the largest city in Africa. The Dendera Temple, not far from the town of Qena, is dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and music. The Temple of Kom Ombo, built in the 2nd century BC, is situated on a hill on the Nile. The Luxor Temple on the east bank of the River Nile is dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut and Chons. The Karnak Temple is situated 3 km north of Luxor.
