Balance of Pressure

Within the aircraft the cabin air pressure corresponds to the pressure at 2'000 metres’ altitude. The change in air pressure within the aircraft is barely perceptible.

Should you note, upon arrival at your destination, that you are unable to balance pressure, please consult a doctor. The change in cabin pressure during descent can cause ear damage. A simple way to check pressure balance is the Valsalva-method: Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils together with your fingers and press air into the back of your throat. If you feel pressure in your inner ear you should not encounter any problems with the change of pressure.

Advice in the event of colds:

  • Chewing and yawning help alleviate the pressure
  • Take precautionary measures by using nasal drops, a nasal spray or nasal cream
  • Give babies a bottle during climbing and descent, or request a bread roll from a flight attendant for the baby to chew on.

Important: In the event of colds or problems with pressure balance in general, please inform the cabin crew as soon as possible. This will enable us to provide you with further advice and medication.
