Zakinthos

Zakinthos

Italian flair in Greece: that is just as much part of the southernmost Ionian island Zakynthos as the magnificent grottoes, golden-coloured sandy beaches and genuine mountain villages. The Venetians who ruled Zakynthos for several centuries bestowed the name ‘Fiore di Levante‘ (Flower of the East) upon the island. A green paradise endowed with fascinating contrasts and justifiably one of Greece’s most popular beach holiday destinations.

Perfect climate, picturesque sights: Zakynthos

The Mediterranean landscape of Zakynthos is a feast for the senses: in the island’s fertile east and southeast, farming villages nestle between olive groves and vineyards. The scent of citrus trees merged with the sharp sea breeze pervades the air in small fishing settlements, whilst the west and northwest of the island are characterised by barren mountain country with dramatically steep coasts that offer breathtaking panoramas.

The Venetian architectural influence affords Zakynthos a distinctly Italian note. Characteristic, free-standing church towers are proximal to majestic villas and narrow, high cypresses: a holiday in Greece with Italy thrown in – and accompanied by the soft melody of a cantata.

Zakynthos Town: hotel comfort, scuba diving, holiday in the sun

The people of Zakynthos call their capital ‘Chora’. The streets of Zakynthos Town are alive with the colourful bustle of everyday activities. Lively cafés and tavernas are just as much part of the city ambience as places of tranquillity and reflection, such as the Platia Solomou or the large church of Agios Dionysios. The pace is also calmer at the Nikolaos pier and between the ruins of the old fortress on Castro Hill.

The pastel-coloured houses of Zakynthos Town are situated at the foot of Castro Hill. Whether you choose to visit one of Greece’s most beautiful church museums, in this case focussing on post-Byzantine art, or simply take a walk to elegant squares and palazzo-like buildings: the capital of Zakynthos is as beautiful as the landscape it is set in.

Beaches and turtles on the peninsula of Skopos and in the bay of Lagunas

Zakynthos is also referred to as Turtle Island given that some beaches are the scene of a wonderful happening: they serve as breeding sites for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles and are thus especially worthy of protection.

The peninsula of Skopos, a narrow stretch of land southwest of Zakynthos Town, offers a magnificent view of the capital and the harbour. Skopos is equally popular among sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers: a hike to the top of Zakynthos’ highest mountain takes you to the ruins of an old monastery, whereas the countless bays and beaches that resemble the South Pacific are a real joy for water nymphs.

Night owls will not want to miss the bay of Laganas located in the south of the island and framed by the peninsula of Skopos and Cape Marathia. This is where you will encounter an optimal fusion of fine sandy beaches and a happy party mood!

Besonderheit Zakinthos

Why are Greek houses painted white and blue?

Nothing is more symbolic of Greece than the colour combination white and blue. Whitewashed, cubic houses with bright blue window frames and cupolas epitomise Greece’s romantic holiday charm.

The colours of the houses reflect the Greek national flag and symbolise the sea and the sky and the purity of the fight for independence. Thus, the choice of colour for their respective houses was also a pledge to Greece in times of Turkish foreign rule.
