Safety
Edelweiss gives utmost priority to the topic of safety. This is why we should like to explain the most important safety measures to you.
Whether you fly once or twice a year to your holiday destination or regularly on business, the same safety regulations apply, in order to protect you, your family and your travel companions. Breaking these rules puts the aircraft with all its passengers at risk, and legal steps can be taken against the perpetrator.
Knowing what to do in the event of an emergency can be crucial for you and your family. Listening carefully to the safety instructions is thus vital, since handling can vary from aircraft to aircraft. Further information on emergency exits and seatbelts can be derived from the safety instructions located in the seat pocket in front of you.
Safety belts protect passengers. Therefore, we recommend that you do not only wear the belts during take-off, landing and when the fasten seat-belt sign is turned on, but throughout the entire flight. The belt should be firmly fastened, but you should still feel comfortable. Upon landing please wait until the fasten seat belt sign has been turned off before unfastening your seatbelt. Special belts will be provided by the flight attendants for infants (under two years).
Security Check
Security Check for Hand Luggage
Due to increased security measures in place at most airports worldwide, it is recommended to arrive at the airport in sufficient time, in order to check in early. The Swiss hand luggage regulations for air passengers are adapted to the EU regulations. Restrictions apply in particular to liquids.
The new laws on hand luggage, passed by the European Commission, allow only travel-size toiletries (100 ml or less) to be taken on board. Each passenger is allowed to take several of these travel-size containers on board, all however must be stowed comfortably in one clear plastic zip-top bag with a volume of 1 litre. This bag has to be screened separately at the security check. It is also required to screen laptops and other larger electronic devices separately.
In the Dominican Republic and Kenya, the security standards of the USA are in place. These standards are in use in the transit areas as well as for departures. Transit passengers are required as usual to proceed to the transit area while the aircraft is then cleaned. Due to the increased security measures in place, for transit and departing passengers, all liquid items in your hand-luggage will be confiscated by the authorities.
Considered as Liquids are
| Spalte1 | Spalte2 | Spalte 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Creams | Lipstick Liquid | Mascara |
| Deodorants | Lotions | Oils |
| Shower Gels | Perfumes | Quark |
| Peanut Butter | Foams | Sprays |
| Gels | Soups | Drinks |
| Soft Cheeses | Yoghurt | Tooth Paste |
Exceptions
- Essential medicines sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), in their original packaging.
- Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted in the presence of the security personnel by the accompanying passenger).
Security Checks for Hand Luggage (Sharp Objects)
Sharp objects exceeding a length of 5cm may not be carried in your hand luggage. Other objects may also be regarded as dangerous and be confiscated by the security authorities, e.g.: knives, hair-pins, nail-files, manicure sets, scissors, tweezers, knitting needles and sewing needles.
Alcohol on Board
Drunkenness on board and related negative behaviour present a safety hazard. Non-compliance with instructions of the aircraft captain constitutes a breach of aviation law; in combination with a related disturbance of order, the legislator can impose a fine and/or imprisonment.
Drunk passengers are frequently a mere nuisance to their fellow passengers. Unfortunately, there have been various serious incidents in the past which have compromised flight safety. If a passenger jeopardises flight safety, the captain can decide on an intermediate landing. The respective passenger will be picked up by the police upon landing, removed from the aircraft and held liable for all incurred costs.
The consumption of self-brought alcohol on board is prohibited.
Electronic Equipment
Electronic equipment can cause interference. For safety reasons, the following electronic devices cannot be used and must remain switched off throughout the flight (not in stand-by mode):
- cell phones / mobile phones
- walky-talkies
- radios
- remote control toys
Electronic devices such as video games, tape recorders, CD-/ minidisc-players, laptops and video cameras must always be switched off during take-off and landing, as well as by instruction of the captain and as soon as the “fasten seatbelt sign is switched on. Failure to do so can be reported.

Any violation of the smoking prohibition will be reported to the Federal Bureau of Aviation. The consequences are the same as with alcohol abuse.
